How to Know It’s Time to Replace Old Stage Curtains
Not everything has an infinite lifespan. After so many years of use, stage curtains start to wear out and run a higher risk of falling apart. If you notice the warning signs, it might be time to switch your curtains out for new ones. This guide will tell you how to know it’s time to replace old stage curtains, as well as help you get started finding a replacement!

Wear and Tear

Stage curtains need to be frequently checked for any rips or tears that appear in the fabric. These have a number of causes, ranging from getting caught on a set piece to getting dragged along the floor. Depending on the tear’s severity, repairs should be done via a sewing machine — preferably not with tape. Tape can leave a residue on the curtain that can’t be removed. Sometimes, of course, the fabric wears out just from age and the frequency of use over the years. When that happens, the fabric becomes too delicate to repair and it should be switched out as soon as possible.

Safety Hazards

Not only do worn-out curtains give off a worse appearance, they can be especially dangerous as well. One benefit of stage curtains is that most have some sort of flame retardant that enables them to keep hanging even while being placed near or up against bright lights. Environmental factors can cause the flame retardant to become depleted over time, and if that happens, your stage drapes can catch on fire from coming into direct contact with any hot stage lights.

Getting Started with New Ones

Once you know it’s time to replace old stage curtains, you’ll want to get started right away on finding the perfect curtains for your stage. The thing is, there’s no such thing as a “standard” stage curtain. Every stage has a different configuration, so you’ll want to plan for one that best fits the dimensions you already have. Especially for smaller venues, your best bet is to use adjustable pipe and drape kits that you can configure to fit your stage’s width and height. From there, figure out the top, bottom, and side finishes from the existing drapes (you’ll want to replicate those in the new ones) as well as the fullness in pleating. You’ll have many fabric options to choose from, whether heavier and more luxurious materials, like Velour, or lighter and more versatile drapes, like Poly Premier. There are a lot of possibilities to picking the stage curtain perfect for you, and your draping company will be happy to assist with any questions you have.
